President Trump has come out with an enigmatic Truth Social post this morning about the progress of negotiations aimed at halting fighting between Russia and Ukraine.
“Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine???” the commander-in-chief wrote.
“Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The bold post from the president comes at a moment when negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have flirted with hope but repeatedly stalled. Earlier this year, direct talks held in Istanbul lasted barely an hour, resulting primarily in prisoner-swaps and no substantive breakthrough toward a cease-fire. Ukraine had pushed for a 30-day immediate truce, while Moscow countered with sweeping demands over Ukrainian territory and military size — a gap that remains wide.
At the same time, the U.S. and its European partners have stepped up pressure and offered various frameworks for peace. A 28-point draft plan, reportedly floated by Washington in November, includes contentious provisions: Ukraine limiting its future armed forces, banning NATO membership, and recognizing contested regions. That framework triggered alarm in Kyiv and among Berlin and Paris, prompting modifications and careful footwork.
