President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is set to reach agreements with major technology companies to prevent the rapid expansion of data centers from increasing utility bills in the United States.
Data centers are critical to âthe boomâ of artificial intelligence in the U.S., Trump said. But people should not be forced to âpick up the tabâ in the form of higher utility bills for data centersâ energy-intensive technology, he added, stating the White House is seeking âcommitmentsâ from companies to keep prices low. Microsoft is leading the way, making âmajor changesâ this week, according to Trump.
âWe are the âHOTTESTâ Country in the World, and Number One in AI. Data Centers are key to that boom, and keeping Americans FREE and SECURE but, the big Technology Companies who build them must âpay their own way,â he said in a statement posted to Truth Social.
Trumpâs announcement seeks to alleviate concerns about the cost of living. And it comes amid widespread Democratic efforts to brand themselves as the champions of affordability in the months leading up to the midterm elections as they fight to upend the Republican Partyâs razor-thin majorities in the House and Senate.
