The People Making Big Bucks Off Democratic Panic

Democratic consulting firm Mothership Strategies developed a novel approach to fundraising for the Democratic Party, which ended up being alarmingly successful in the 2018 midterm elections. Utilizing panic-inducing solicitations sent via email or text, the firm utilized alarming messages, such as 'We're on the verge of BANKRUPTCY' and 'Trump is INCHES away from firing Robert Mueller'.

This style of communication proved to be successful and by the end of 2018, Mothership Strategies had grown from fewer than 40 staffers to over 100.

Despite the rapid growth, concerns began to arise around the firm’s approach. Criticisms led Mothership Strategies to step back from campaign involvement in 2023, with watchdog groups such as OpenSecrets revealing that the firm was paid over $50 million during the 2022 midterms. As it turned out, only a tiny fraction (@2%) of the money raised went to the campaigns.

The on-going fear is that such aggressive fundraising tactics could lead to donor fatigue, thereby hurting the Democratic Party in the long term. Furthermore, there is concern about the deceptive nature of these tactics, with critics arguing that the party is preying on its vulnerable supporters.

This muscular, hard-charging approach has cast a harsh spotlight on the Democratic Party’s fundraising strategies and raised questions about the potential for manipulation in the hands of unscrupulous consulting firms.
