Mark Wills on the Hits, Gospel Harmony & His Nashville Journey

Mark Wills passed on one particular song three times. Then he heard it on the radio.

On Episode 130 of Try That in a Small Town, Mark joins Kurt Allison, Tully Kennedy, Kelley Lovelace, and Neil Thrasher for stories about the songs, decisions, and friendships behind his country music career.

Mark shares how singing Nashville demos led to his record deal, the story behind passing on a future hit, and his memories of “19 Somethin’.” He also discusses Grand Ole Opry membership, earning your craft onstage, and why great songs don’t have an expiration date.

The conversation turns to faith, old hymns, and his gospel project, Grand Ole Revival—including recording his vocals and the band live on the Opry stage, then inviting friends to add their voices.

Plus: an unforgettable Undertaker story, a hilarious encounter with Chad Brock, college football rivalry talk, and a performance of “Places I’ve Never Been.”
