First Lowcountry case of measles seen in Hampton County, more potentially exposed

The first case of measles in the Lowcountry this year was diagnosed in a Hampton County adult who had recently traveled abroad, the S.C. Department of Public Health reported June 3.

The person was not vaccinated and did not have immunity through a previous infection, the agency said.

While the source of the measles infection is not known, international travel has led to previous sporadic cases in South Carolina in the past, and the measles virus circulates widely in many countries, including in parts of the U.S.

The person was confirmed by lab tests to have measles and eight other people who may have been potentially exposed were advised to quarantine for 21 days, which would last through June 21, public health said.
