Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister. Less than two years after securing a historic majority in the general election, he has bowed to pressure from his own party and MPs.
Notably shaken and emotional, Sir Keir paid tribute to his wife and children and said entering Downing Street was “the proudest moment of my life”, but admitted that his time in office was over.
In perhaps his last act of defiance, he denied Andy Burnham an easy coronation as he confirmed he would remain in office until the conclusion of a leadership contest to “ensure an orderly handover of power”.
